Don't be put off by the quality of the preview version to the left, which in some browsers doesn't display well. The full size SVG should look fine. This is the Sudarium of Saint Veronica, an engraving by Claude Mellan from the 17th century. Mellan's engraving consisted of a single spiral line beginning at Christ's nose, the modulation of the width of the line forming the image. I traced this with Inkscape from a public domain image on Wikimedia Commons (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claude_Mellan#/media/File:Claude_Mellan_-_Face_of_Christ_-_WGA14764.jpg), but the result was far from perfect. So I spent many hours repairing the thousands of instances where the line was broken or had merged with its neighbour. What kept me at it was the knowledge that however long and painstaking that task was, it was nothing compared with the effort the original engraver must have put in. But the result is a pretty clean vector version of Mellan's remarkable piece.
